DOT Physicals Q&A

What are DOT physicals?

DOT physicals are medical examinations required for commercial drivers who operate vehicles regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These exams are designed to evaluate a driver’s physical and mental health to ensure they can safely perform the duties of commercial driving.

Passing a DOT physical allows drivers to receive or renew their Medical Examiner’s Certificate, which is typically valid for up to two years and confirms they meet federal health standards required for public safety, job eligibility, and continued employment within the commercial transportation industry.

At Advanced Healthcare & Injury Center, LLC, DOT physicals are conducted efficiently while maintaining strict adherence to FMCSA standards. Dr. McCants ensures each exam is thorough, accurate, and properly documented to help drivers remain compliant and on the road.

Who needs a DOT physical?

You may need a DOT physical if you operate a commercial motor vehicle and:

  • Drive a vehicle weighing 10,001 pounds or more
  • Transport hazardous materials
  • Drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 15 passengers
  • Hold or are applying for a commercial driver’s license (CDL)

DOT physicals are also required for drivers renewing an expired medical certificate or returning to work after certain medical conditions or changes in health status.

What does a DOT physical exam include?

During your DOT physical at Advanced Healthcare & Injury Center, LLC, Dr. McCants reviews your medical history and performs a comprehensive physical exam. The evaluation may include:

  • Vision and hearing screening
  • Blood pressure and heart rate checks
  • Urinalysis
  • Assessment of cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and musculoskeletal health

The exam also evaluates conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and other health concerns that could affect driving safety.

What can I expect after my DOT physical?

After completing your exam, Dr. McCants determines whether you meet DOT medical standards. If approved, you receive your Medical Examiner’s Certificate, typically valid for up to two years, depending on your health status.
